There were 2 cats in the courtyard but they never bothered us and I never saw any animals in the main house. Louis Armstrong Park is a block away and also a great place to blend in with the locals. We felt comfortable walking day and night but, as in any large city, don't walk at night alone and always know where you should not be. There is a great neighborhood coffee house a few blocks from the guest house called Cafe Treme with good, inexpensive coffee and a nice atmosphere. The breakfasts could have been better, maybe add bread for toast, a better fruit selection, and some cereals and milk. We were on the main floor of the house, we didn't hear noise from neighbors or room above but could sometimes hear people in the hallway and the courtyard area (we were in the back of the house), but it was always quiet during sleeping hours. The high ceilings helped keep it from being claustrophobic. The rooms are small but clean and the beds are comfortable.
They have a lot available for $20/night, but we were able to find a space on the street within a block of the Guest House all three nights and there were no meters or time limits.
We rented a car for a few days to take day trips. The Guest House is a block from the French Quarter so a nice walk that let's you see more than the beaten path.
